American noir fiction writer. He wrote for various pulp magazines under several pseudonyms. His big break came when his second novel Dark Passage(1946) was filmed for Warner Bros. with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.

Goodis moved to Hollywood and signed a six-year contract with Warner Bros., where he scripted The Unfaithful, a remake of Somerset Maugham's The Letter. Some of his scripts were never produced, including an adaptation of Raymond Chandler's The Lady in the Lake.
