His work covered a variety of genres, including historical fiction, science fiction and mystery. Although he was very popular in his day, today The Last Days of Pompeii is the only one of his works that is widely read.
He is credited with the creation of the phrases "the pen is mightier than the sword" and "the great unwashed", and the famous opening line "It was a dark and stormy night". As well as his career as a writer Bulwer-Lytton was elected as a member of parliament in 1831.
