Belgian writer. He was a pioneer in writing in Dutch after the secession from the Netherlands in 1830 left Belgium, at that time, a mostly French-speaking country. His first success came in 1838 with the historical novel De Leeuw van Vlaanderen / The Lion of Flanders.  Over the course of his career, he published over 100 novels and novellas and achieved considerable popularity.  After his death, with the decline of romanticism, his works became less fashionable but are still considered as classics of Flemish literature.
