Russian novelist and playwright who is considered one of major figures in nineteen century Russian literature; he is best remembered for his novel Fathers and Sons.
He was born into a wealthy family and educated at the Universities of Moscow and St. Petersburg, where he studied classics, philology and Russian literature. In 1838 he went to Berlin to study philosophy at the University. In 1841 he started working for the Russian Civil Service, spending several years working at the Ministry of the Interior. He was able to devote himself to literature after he had success with two of his earlier works. He spent much of his life living outside of Russia, in Germany and France, due to the reaction of the Russian critics to his novel Fathers and Sons. Shortly after his death, Turgenev's brain was weighed at 2,021 grams. It is believed to be the largest human brain on record.
