French poet. Awarded the 1960 Nobel Prize for Literature for the soaring flight and the evocative imagery of his poetry which in a visionary fashion reflects the conditions of our time. 
He was born in Guadeloupe where his family owned two plantations. In 1897 they returned to France and in 1904 he started studying law in Bordeaux. He began working for the Foreign Ministry in 1911 and during World War I he was attached to the government press corps. During World War II he had his French citizenship revoked by the Vichy government and moved the United States where he remained long after the war ended.
