American novelist and playwright. Awarded the 1930 Nobel Prize in Literature for his vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create, with wit and humour, new types of characters. He was the first writer from the United States to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
He was born in Minnesota and developed a love of reading at an early age. He studied at Yale University. In 1926 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Arrowsmith, but he declined the award. In 1928 he married Dorothy Thompson with whom he had a son. His work is known for being critical of America and capitalist values.
