Influential American author of crime novels and stories. He created the character of Philip Marlowe who, along with Dashiell Hammett's Sam Spade, is synonymous with "private detective." 
His first novel, The Big Sleep, was published in 1939 and his literary success led to work as a Hollywood screenwriter. He co-wrote, with Billy Wilder, the screenplay for the James M. Cain novel Double Indemnity.
