American author who is best known for his Western fiction. L'Amour wrote 89 novels, over 250 short stories, and has sold over 320 million copies of his work in over 20 languages. In 1982 he won the Congressional Gold Medal, and in 1984 President Ronald Reagan awarded L'Amour the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
