Greyfriars Bobby was a Skye Terrier who became known in 19th-century Edinburgh for supposedly spending 14 years guarding the grave of John Gray, his owner, until he died himself.
The story continues to be well known through several books and films. The novel Greyfriars Bobby (1912) by Eleanor Atkinson is based on his life.
A red granite stone was erected on Bobby's grave at the entrance to the Kirkyard by The Dog Aid Society of Scotland in 1981. This has been used in a shrine-like manner, with sticks (for Bobby to fetch) frequently being left.
