Yiddish author and playwright. The musical Fiddler on the Roof, based on his stories about Tevye the Dairyman (1894), was the first commercially successful English-language stage production about Jewish life in Eastern Europe.
Sholem Aleichem had a mortal fear of the number 13. His manuscripts never have a page 13; he numbered the thirteenth pages of his manuscripts as 12a.
