Robert Tressell was the pen name used by Robert Noonan, an Irish-British writer who is best known for his novel The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists. He completed The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists in 1910, but it was rejected by three publishing houses. The following year Robert was admitted to the Royal Liverpool Infirmary Workhouse, where he died and was buried in a mass grave with twelve other paupers. His daughter had managed to save the manuscript from being burnt after its initial rejections, and after Robert's death she was instrumental in its publication in 1914.
