Russian writer and poet. Awarded the 1958 Nobel Prize in Literature for his important achievement both in contemporary lyrical poetry and in the field of the great Russian epic tradition. He was however forced to decline the prize for fear that he would have his Soviet citizenship removed if he travelled to Stockholm to accept the award.
He is best known around the world for his novel Doctor Zhivago, but in Russia he is best remembered as a poet with his collection My Sister Life considered as the most influential collection published in Russian during the 20th Century.
Doctor Zhivago was filmed in 1965 by David Lean. The film, staring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, won five Academy Awards in 1966.
