German novelist. A member of the Communist Party from the early 1930s, he emigrated to France in 1933 and, after participation in the Spanish Civil War, lived in Mexico.
He returned to Germany in 1948 and settled in East Berlin. He is the author of novels, including the autobiographical Söldner und Soldat (1935) and Leutnant Bertram (1947). Their central theme is the fight against fascism and renewal.
