American author of fantasy and science fiction who is known for his series of books for the Star Trek franchise and for the four-volume Cities in Flight series (They Shall Have Stars (1956), A Life for the Stars (1962), Earthman, Come Home (1955) and A Clash of Cymbals (1959)).  The series features entire cities that are able to fly through space using an anti-gravity device, the spindizzy. The stories cover roughly two thousand years, from their very near future to the end of the universe. In 2002 Blish was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.
