by Honoré de BalzacFrench novelist, considered to be one of the fathers of realism in European literature. His work, collectively known as La Comédie humaine, consists of over ninety novels and short stories in which Balzac tries to understand the realities of modern life in France.
Born in Tours, he worked as a notary’s clerk after finishing his education and then he started working as a journalist. His literary career began with historical novels written under pseudonyms but he achieved commercial success in 1831 with La Peau de Chagrin. Many of his novels, like those of Charles Dickens, were originally published in serial form.
