In 1948 Other Voices, Other Rooms was published and it sold more than 26,000 copies. Capote was friends with Harper Lee and it has been implied that a large part of To Kill a Mockingbird was in fact written by Capote.
Capote, who was openly gay, was as famous for his lifestyle and friends as he was for his work. In later life he became reclusive as he had been abandoned by many of his celebrity friends due to a short story he wrote in which many of his friends had appeared, unfortunately poorly disguised. He was an alcoholic and was addicted to various drugs; he died from an overdose.
He was cremated and half of his ashes interred at Westwood Memorial Park, Los Angeles and the other half were kept by his partner, Jack Dunphy. When Dunphy died in 1992 their ashes were combined and scattered on Crooked Pond, Sag Harbor, Long Island where they had lived for many years. A stone marker indicates the spot where their combined ashes were thrown into the pond.
