German linguistic professors who are best known as the publishers of folk and fairy tales. After both studying law at University they traveled widely throughout Europe carrying out linguistic research into how pronunciation of words changed over time. There research eventually resulted in the formulation of Grimm’s Law.
During their research they discovered that the easiest way of getting older people to speak to them, so that they could record their speech patterns, was to ask them to tell them their favorite stories, which the Brothers collected and eventually began to publish in 1812. The collections of stories were an immediate success and they are what the brothers are best known for, even though they were secondary to the brothers linguistic research.
