American novelist and short story writer who also used the pseudonyms George Hopley and William Irish. He was born in New York City, but spent his childhood in Mexico with his father who was working as an engineer. His 1942 novel It had to be Murder (under the pseudonym William Irish) was the basis for the 1954 Hitchcock film Rear Window. Woolrich married in 1930, but the marriage only lasted for three years due to his homosexuality. He lived most of his life as a recluse, particularly after he had a leg amputated due to an untreated foot infection.
