Scottish weaver and doggerel poet. He won notoriety as an extremely bad poet who exhibited no recognition of or concern for his peers' opinions of his work.  He wrote about 200 poems, including his infamous The Tay Bridge Disaster, which are widely regarded as some of the worst in English literature.
He died penniless in 1902 and was buried in an unmarked grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh. A memorial plaque installed to his memory in 1999 is inscribed:
"I am your gracious Majesty
ever faithful to Thee,
William McGonagall, the Poor Poet,
That lives in Dundee."
