English novelist and poet who was born in Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire. After the death of her mother, in 1845, Dinah relocated to London where, wishing to earn her living by writing, she soon became one of most well known female novelists of her time. She is best remembered for the novel John Halifax, Gentleman, although she considered A Life for a Life to be her best work. She married George Craik in 1864, they adopted a daughter in 1869. She died of heart failure whilst preparing for her daughters wedding.
