Danish poet and novelist. He was awarded the 1917 (jointly with Henrik Pontoppidan) Nobel Prize in Literature for his varied and rich poetry, which is inspired by lofty ideals. 
He settled in Germany, which made him unpopular in his native Denmark and his winning the Nobel Prize was greeted with little enthusiasm and his work is now largely forgotten.
