French tragedian who is generally considered one of the three great seventeenth-century French dramatists, along with Molière and Jean Racine. His best know work is Le Cid (1637), based on the play Las Mocedades del Cid (1621) by Guillén de Castro. Both plays were based on the legend of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar (El Cid), a military figure in Medieval Spain.
