British thriller and occult novelist who was one of the best-selling novelists in the World during the 1905’s and 1960’s.
He was educated at Dulwich College; where P.G. Wodehouse and Raymond Chandler had also attended, but Wheatley was expelled and joined the Merchant Navy. He served in the First World War, but was invalided out after being gassed at Passchendaele. 
Wheatley achieved success with his second book The Forbidden Territory and at the height of his popularity his publishers were recording sales of over a million copies a year. Several of his books were filmed; best known is the 1968 Hammer film The Devil Rides Out starring Christopher Lee.
