German author and playwright whose work was influenced buy his experience during the Second World War. His most famous work is the drama Draußen vor der Tür / The Man Outside, which he wrote in the first days after World War II. 
Borchert served on the Eastern front where he experienced the full horror of the eastern conflict. In February 1942 he lost a finger whilst on sentry duty which he claimed happened during hand-to-hand conflict, but his superior officer accused him of self mutilation and had him arrested. He was found not guilty at his trial but he was rearrested for making statements endangering the country and sent back to the Eastern front. He suffered frostbite and several bouts of hepatitis and was granted medical leave. Following the war he continued writing but his health worsened and he entered a hepatic sanatorium in 1947.
