Austrian playwright, novelist and poet. He was born in Vienna and encouraged to write from an early age by his father, who himself had tried to become a poet. After the death of his father he was brought up by his mother who managed to ensure that Anzengruber received an education.  He left school in 1855 and worked in a bookstore for two years before deciding to become an actor. He worked as an actor for the next ten years, but was never a great success.
He started working as a clerk in Vienna and in 1870 his play, The Priest from Kirchfeld, was staged to great success. He was able to devote himself to writing full-time and had his plays performed across Europe. In November 1899 he contracted anthrax and died two weeks later due to blood poisoning.
