English crime writer known as ‘The Queen of Crime’, she also wrote romance under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. She is the best known writer of her genre and her work has been translated into over one hundred languages. Christie wrote over eighty novels, many of which feature her two best known characters Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Much of her work has been filmed and she also wrote the stage play, ‘The Mousetrap’, which holds the record for the longest run in London. 
She was born in Torquay to an American father and British mother. She was married in 1914, to Colonel Archibald Christie, they had one daughter but they divorced in 1928. In 1930 she married Sir Max Mallowan who was an archaeologist. She travelled regularly with him and the influence of this can be seen in her work. In 1971 she was given the title of Dame Commander of the British Empire.
