English writer who is best known for writing comic novels featuring unassuming characters leading unremarkable lives. She achieved initial success in 1950 with the publication of Some Tame Gazelle and then a new Pym novel was published every few years until 1963 when her work began to be rejected for being out of step with the times.
She remained in the literary wilderness until 1977 when she was called "the most underrated novelist of the century" by Philip Larkin and her work underwent a resurgence. Her 1977 novel Quartet in Autumn was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
