English novelist and brother of the novelist Henry Kingsley. He was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge before choosing a career in the church. In 1844 he became rector of Eversley, Hampshire. In 1860 he became a professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge and his knowledge of history is apparent in his writing as he wrote several historical novels, the best known of which is Westward Ho! Kingsley’s best known work is the children’s classic The Water Babies in which Kingsley’s interest in social reform can be seen.
