French writer, best remembered for his novels Le Rouge et le Noir /The Red and the Black (1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme / The Charterhouse of Parma (1839). He was one of the most original writers of the early nineteenth century and his work was at the forefront of the development of the modern novel.
