English novelist, best known for his Horatio Hornblower series and also The African Queen which was filmed in 1951 by John Huston.  The Hornblower series is built around a character that is heroic but not too heroic and has resulted in comparisons with the seafaring novels of Patrick O’Brian.
During the Second World War he moved to the United States where he was involved in writing propaganda to encourage the U.S. to enter the war on the side of the Allies.
