Italian poet and novelist. Born in Milan, he struggled at school but at age fifteen he discovered an aptitude for poetry. In 1819 he published the tragedy, Il Conte di Carmagnola, which was subject to controversy as Manzoni had rejected classical conventions.
In 1822 he completed the novel I Promessi sposi / The Betrothed and it is generally agreed that this novel of 16th century Milan is his greatest work.
After his death he was mourned throughout his country and lay in state for several days. Verdi‘s Requiem was written to honor his memory.
