French novelist. After finishing school he worked as a civil servant for thirty-two years. His best known work, À rebours / Against Nature was published in 1884 and in 1891 Là-Bas / The Damned was published and it gained him much attention for its depiction of Satanism. Huysmans was also known for his art criticism and he was an early advocate of Impressionism.
