American novelist and short story writer. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, he is best remembered as the author of The Scarlet Letter
He was raised by his mother as his father, a ships captain, died when Nathaniel was four years old. He attended Bowdoin College in Maine where he started to write. He only started to put his name to his stories when they were published in the 1837 collection Twice Told Tales.  In 1838 he became engaged to Sophia Peabody, whom he married in 1842. The couple, who were very reclusive, enjoyed a long marriage and had three children.
