He was the bishop of Hippo Regius in North Africa (present day Annaba) and is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers in Western Christianity. In 1842, a portion of Augustine's right arm was returned from Pavia to Annaba. It now rests in the Saint Augustin Basilica within a glass tube inserted into the arm of a life-size marble statue of the saint.
