English novelist. Trollope was born in London, the son of a barrister and his wife Frances (who went on to become a novelist, writing under the name Fanny Trollope). At 19, he joined the post office as junior clerk.  From the age of 25, he lived in Ireland for 17 years. Here he married, and wrote two novels with Irish settings, and continued working for the post office.  In 1852, Trollope had the idea for The Wardenthe first of six Barsetshire novels. Trollope continued to produce novels regularly throughout his life while maintaining his job at the post office. Trollope was a very prolific author and by the time of his death had written a total of 47 novels.
