The O. Henry Awards are given annually to outstanding short stories. He was born William Sydney Porter in North Carolina and after leaving school he worked as a bookkeeper in his uncle’s drugstore. In 1882 he moved to Texas where he held several different jobs including, ranch hand and pharmacist. In 1887 he eloped with Athol Estes, a seventeen year old from a wealthy family; the couple had two children. In 1894 he left his job at the First National Bank of Austin after he was accused of embezzlement. William Ernest Henley (1849-1903)

While incarcerated on Robben Island prison, Nelson Mandela recited the poem Invictus to other prisoners and was empowered by its message of self-mastery. The Finnish writer Hella Wuolijoki wrote in her memoirs that the poem also inspired and encouraged her during her incarceration in prison in Helsinki at the end of World War II. From the age of 12 Henley suffered from tuberculosis of the bone which resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee during 1868–69. His most famous work is the drama Draußen vor der Tür / The Man Outside , which he wrote in the first days after World War II. Borchert served on the Eastern front where he experienced the full horror of the eastern conflict. In February 1942 he lost a finger whilst on sentry duty which he claimed happened during hand-to-hand conflict, but his superior officer accused him of self mutilation and had him arrested. He was found not guilty at his trial but he was rearrested for making statements endangering the country and sent back to the Eastern front.
