Lewis Carroll (1832-1898)

He was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson in Warrington, Cheshire and was the third of eleven children. Throughout his life he suffered with a stammer, but this not stop him from singing or telling stories to audiences. He was educated at home until he reached the age of twelve when he was sent away to school in Richmond and then to Rugby. In January 1851 he went to Christ Church College, Oxford. He excelled academically, without having to apply himself, and he gained the Lectureship in mathematics at Christ Church and remained there until he died. Wolfgang Borchert (1921-1947)

His most famous work is the drama Draußen vor der Tür / The Man Outside , which he wrote in the first days after World War II. Borchert served on the Eastern front where he experienced the full horror of the eastern conflict. In February 1942 he lost a finger whilst on sentry duty which he claimed happened during hand-to-hand conflict, but his superior officer accused him of self mutilation and had him arrested. He was found not guilty at his trial but he was rearrested for making statements endangering the country and sent back to the Eastern front. Ebenezer Scroggie (1792-1836)

Death: 1836 Location: Canongate Kirkyard , Edinburgh, Scotland Photo taken by: Kim Traynor In his diaries, Charles Dickens states that his celebrated fictional character Ebenezer Scrooge stems from a grave marker which he saw in 1841, while taking an evening walk in the Canongate Kirkyard. The headstone was for Ebenezer Scroggie. The marker identified Scroggie as a "meal man" (corn merchant), but Dickens misread this as "mean man" , due to the fading light and his mild dyslexia. The grave marker was lost during construction work at part of the Kirkyard in 1932.
