His most famous work is the drama Draußen vor der Tür / The Man Outside , which he wrote in the first days after World War II. Borchert served on the Eastern front where he experienced the full horror of the eastern conflict. In February 1942 he lost a finger whilst on sentry duty which he claimed happened during hand-to-hand conflict, but his superior officer accused him of self mutilation and had him arrested.
