Restoration novelist and playwright. Credited with being the first professional English female novelist. 
The exact details of her life are unknown, but is believed that she travelled to an English sugar colony in Suriname in the 1660s and that this trip was this inspiration for her most famous novel Oroonoko. It is also believed that she worked as a political spy in Antwerp for the court of Charles II.
