English writer whose works often feature upper class English society. He was born in London and both he and his brother, the writer Alec Waugh, were educated at public school. He went on to study at Oxford but he left without completing his degree. He found work as a teacher at a private school, a cabinet makers apprentice and a journalist before he found success with his first novel Decline and Fall. In 1928 he married Evelyn Gardner but the marriage only lasted a couple of years before it was annulled. Waugh went on to marry Laura Herbert who he had seven children with, including the writer and journalist Auberon Waugh.
