American born author and literary critic; he spent most of his life in Europe and became a British citizen shortly before he died to show his loyalty to his adopted country.
James was born in New York City and was educated in Geneva, Paris and London. He briefly attended Harvard Law School, but his interest and talent was directed towards fiction rather than law.
He published books in a variety of genres, including autobiography, novels, travel writing, short stories and criticism. His private life has been subject to much speculation as he never married and in much of personnel correspondence he expresses affection to both men and women. He suffered a stroke on 2nd December 1915 and he died three months later.
