Swiss, late 19th century, author who is best remembered for his autobiographical novel Der grüne Heinrich / Green Henry which is based on his own frustrated attempts to become a painter.
After being expelled from school, aged fifteen, Keller became an apprentice landscape painter and went to Munich to study. He returned to Zürich after two years and in 1842 he gave up painting to concentrate on writing.
