English novelist and poet of the Victoria era. He was born in Portsmouth, England and was apprenticed to a solicitor, but decided to take up a career in journalism after marrying Mary Nicolls, the daughter of the author Thomas Love Peacock.  His first novel The Shaving of Shagpat was a fantasy, published in 1855 it received good reviews although it did not become a popular success.  In 1860 Meredith started to work for a publisher where he read submitted manuscripts and advised on whether they should be published. Whilst working in this role he gave advice to a young Thomas Hardy.
