Johanna Spyri (1827-1901)

She was born Johanna Louise Heusser in rural Switzerland. She married Bernhard Spyri, a lawyer, in 1852 and while living in Zürich she started to write about life in the country. The story of Heid i was an instant success and although she had written other books and continued to write until her death the enduring popularity of Heidi overshadows her other work. It is the story of an orphan who lives with her grandfather in the Alps and is famous for its portrayal of how children cope with the basic issues of life such as sickness and poverty. Johanna’s husband and only son both died in 1884 and she devoted the rest of her life to charitable causes and writing. She is an icon in Switzerland, and her portrait has appeared on both stamps and coins.

H. G. Wells (Herbert George) (1866-1946)

Brunetto Latini (c.1220–1294)

Between 1262 and 1266 he wrote a prose encyclopaedia in French, Li Livres dou Trésor, and an abridged version in Italian verse called the Tesoretto. Lewis Carroll (1832-1898)

He was educated at home until he reached the age of twelve when he was sent away to school in Richmond and then to Rugby. In January 1851 he went to Christ Church College, Oxford. He excelled academically, without having to apply himself, and he gained the Lectureship in mathematics at Christ Church and remained there until he died. Jean Cocteau (1889-1963)

Cocteau is best known novel is Les Enfants Terribles (1929). During World War I Cocteau served in the Red Cross as an ambulance driver. This was the period in which he met the poet Guillaume Apollinaire , artists Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani, and numerous other writers and artists with whom he later collaborated. In 1955 Cocteau was made a member of the Académie française. According to his wishes Cocteau is buried beneath the floor of the Chapelle Saint-Blaise des Simples in Milly-la-Forêt. The epitaph on his gravestone set in the floor of the chapel reads: Je reste avec vous / I stay with you.
